Creating Breakthroughs: Harnessing Basic Science and Engineering to End Cancer

Every cancer breakthrough begins with basic science. In this talk, Rohit Bhargava, the Phillip and Ann Sharp Director of the Cancer Center at Illinois, will explore how foundational, curiosity-driven research sparks the innovations that lead to transformative technologies and lifesaving cancer therapies. From understanding the origins of cancer at the molecular level to designing engineering-driven tools for early detection and personalized treatment, Dr. Bhargava will share success stories from his own work and from colleagues across the Cancer Center at Illinois (CCIL). He will describe how CCIL is uniquely integrating engineering, physical, and biological sciences to accelerate discoveries from the lab to the clinic and to educate the next generation of Illinois alumni. Finally, he will describe how Illinois is emerging at the forefront of the next generation of cancer breakthroughs with “Cancer Engineering.”
