UIAA Speaker Series: Cara Finnegan on Presidential Portraiture and Photography

LAS Professor Cara Finnegan

The University of Illinois Alumni Association is bringing Alumni College to your home! Please join us on February 25 to learn more about the visual history of the US presidency from LAS Professor Cara Finnegan.

Throughout U.S. history, presidents have participated in photography as subjects, producers, and consumers of photographs. This heavily-illustrated talk will tell the story of how presidents have participated in key moments in the history of photography, from the first presidential images produced in the 19th century to the digital revolution of the 21st. From Washington to Obama, from daguerreotypes to selfies, the history of photographic presidents has a lot to tell us about who we are as Americans and what we value.

Cara Finnegan is a professor of communication and historian of photography at UIUC. She is the author of three books of photography history, including the book on which this talk is based, Photographic Presidents: Making History from Daguerreotype to Digital, which will be published by University of Illinois Press in April 2021.
