Set off on an adventure in Spain’s enchantingly beautiful Castile and León region, where majestic medieval castles and fortresses dot the vast, open landscapes! Stay for seven nights in Segovia’s old town at a 17th-century convent-turned-deluxe hotel overlooking the plains. Discover Segovia’s stunning treasures, including one of the finest surviving Roman aqueducts and the fairy-tale Alcázar, the fortified palace of Castilian kings. Then venture off to fabled cities including Ávila, enclosed by an impressive medieval wall, and Toledo, the magnificent former capital with wonderfully preserved elements of its Christian, Muslim and Jewish heritage. In Salamanca, the “Golden City,” delight in honey-colored, sandstone architecture and the lively scene at Spain’s oldest university. Wander in the landscaped gardens of the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso and view acclaimed art in Madrid’s Prado Museum. This fabulous, small-group experience includes ample meals, wine with dinner, plus a special lunch and wine tasting in the Duero Valley. There is no supplement for solo travelers.

Activity Level ratings indicate each excursion’s physical expectations. To make the best personal choice, please evaluate each excursion’s rating and your ability to meet the tour’s physical demands. Please note excursions on this program require you to: walk on cobblestones, unpaved paths or uneven surfaces; and get on/off motor coaches, boats and trains.
1–Mild: walk under 1 mile on mainly flat terrain; navigate under 50 stairs; stand under 1 hour

Arrive at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport. Proceed through immigration to the baggage claim area and retrieve your luggage. After completing customs, AHI FlexAir passengers traveling on flights that qualify for the group arrival transfer and Land Program passengers who have purchased seats on the group transfer should exit the baggage claim area and proceed to the Arrivals Hall, where an AHI Travel representative will meet you.

Transfer to Hotel Eurostars Convento Capuchinos in Segovia, a 400-year-old convent turned hotel offering a wellness center, gardens and a terrace with sweeping views of the Eresma Valley. Please note, if you arrive before check-in time, your room may not be immediately available.

Tonight, at the hotel, get acquainted with your fellow travelers at a Welcome Reception, and then gather for a Welcome Dinner.

September 23 Segovia

Enjoy a buffet breakfast at your hotel each morning.

Discovery: Segovia.
Activity level: Moderate
Step back in time in Old Castile, as you explore the ochre-tinged landmarks, stone bridges and lively streets of Segovia. See the Plaza Mayor, buzzing with locals going about their daily routines, and enjoy the morning light as it streams through stained-glassed windows inside Segovia’s glorious Gothic Cathedral. Stroll through the threshold of Segovia’s fairytale-like Alcazar, a magnificent cliff-side fortress said to have inspired Walt Disney’s design for Sleeping Beauty’s castle. Later, marvel at the granite pillars and arches of Segovia’s great Roman Aqueduct. Standing guard over the Old City, Segovia’s Aqueduct is one of the best-preserved elevated Roman aqueducts in the world.

Enjoy lunch with fellow travelers at a traditional Segovian restaurant.

Free Time:The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure to continue to explore Segovia or return to the hotel.

September 24 Salamanca

Discovery: Salamanca.
Activity level: Moderate
Following breakfast, depart Segovia for Salamanca, home of the oldest university in Spain. Enjoy an insightful introduction as you explore “the Golden City” with an expert guide and take advantage of some free time along the way. See the honey-colored Plaza Mayor, widely considered one of Spain’s most beautiful squares, and Casa de las Conchas, a cherished landmark adorned with curious shells. Witness Salamanca’s bustling Universidad, established by Alfonso IX in 1218, and continue to survey the centuries as you step inside the city’s two famous cathedrals which are joined together: the Romanesque Old Cathedral and the baroque New Cathedral.

A grape-growing center since ancient times, Spain’s Duero Valley sets the scene for an unforgettable lunch inspired by the vineyards. Learn about the art of Spanish winemaking during a wine tasting and lunch in a friendly hacienda.

September 25 Madrid

Discovery: Madrid & Spanish Art.
Activity level: Moderate
Travel to Madrid, Spain’s regal yet relaxed capital, where a private guide will escort you through the galleries of the world-famous Prado Museum, home to masterpieces by Velázquez, Rubens, Goya, El Bosco, El Greco and more. Enjoy a classic Spanish lunch afterward.

Madrid is a city where life is lived on the sun-kissed streets. Soak up the sights during a panoramic tour with stops at the sprawling Plaza Mayor and the Palacio Real, still in use for state ceremonies. Then, enjoy some free time to explore further before returning to Segovia.

September 26 Ávila

Free Time: Sleep in today or explore your enchanting surroundings before visiting the lovely city of Àvila.

Upon arrival in Àvila, enjoy a short walk to enchanting Parador de Àvila for a special lunch with fellow travelers.

Enrichment: The History of Castile and its Most Famous Characters.
Sit down to an enlightening discussion about pivotal figures in Spanish history, including Ferdinand of Aragon, Isabella of Castile and explorer Christopher Columbus.

Discovery: Àvila.
Activity level: Moderate
Step inside Àvila’s intact walls and embrace this fascinating UNESCO World Heritage city. Prized for its well-preserved medieval heritage, Àvila is also an important pilgrimage destination. Saint Teresa, the Spanish Roman Catholic saint, was born in Àvila in 1515 and made it her home. Inside the fortified walls, imagine the wealth, power and influence of Àvila as you spend the day amid Romanesque churches and medieval landmarks built by nobles in the 11th century.

Àvila’s famous Cathedral is built into the city walls. Bridging the gap between Romanesque and Gothic, the cathedral offers a mix of architectural styles and religious artistry. Inside, take an up-close look at numerous highlights including a star-shaped cupola, elegant choir stalls carved by Dutch sculptor Cornelius, 15th-century songbooks and the marble sepulcher of Bishop Alonso de Madrigal, known as El Tostado for his tanned complexion.

Free Time: Roam Àvila’s intimate narrow alleyways, take a closer look at the ancient turrets and gates of the city or sip a glass of local wine in one of many tiny plazas before returning to Segovia.

September 27 Toledo

Discovery: Toledo.
Activity level: Moderate
Edged by the Tagus River, magnificent Toledo looks straight from the pages of a storybook. Immerse yourself in this former capital and see firsthand the rich cultural heritage that resulted from the unique interplay between Christian, Jewish and Moorish residents. Receive a formal welcome as you pass Carlos I’s coat of arms emblazoned on the Puerta Nueva la Bisagra, the city’s northern gate.

Feast your eyes on the religious treasures inside the Cathedral of Toledo, the first cathedral to reclaim central Spain for Christianity. Afterward, visit the Church of Santo Tome, a modest chapel that is home to El Greco’s masterpiece “The Burial of the Count of Orgaz,” created in 1586. Walk beneath the white horseshoe arches in Santa Maria La Blanca Synagogue. Now a museum, the former synagogue was originally built around 1180. Designed in Mudéjar style by Moorish architects in Christian territory, the landmark reflects the fascinating legacy of three cultures.

Free Time: Enjoy an independent lunch and time to explore Toledo before returning to Segovia later this afternoon.

September 28 San Ildefonso

Discovery: La Granja de San Ildefonso.
Activity level: Moderate
This morning, revel in the splendor of the 18th-century Spanish monarchy at this lavish baroque palace. See how King Phillip V directed his architects, artists and gardeners to elevate this once-modest farm into a royal palace reminiscent of his birthplace at Versailles. Inside, the sumptuous palace features a collection of 15th- to 18th-century tapestries while outside, the grounds are nothing short of a royal playground replete with a French-style maze and landscaped gardens designed by Rene Carlier, a disciple of Louis XIV’s architect. A large pond dubbed “The Sea” supplies water to 26 fantastical fountains featuring statuary gods and playful nymphs.

Free Time: Return to Segovia for a final afternoon at leisure to enjoy shopping, sightseeing or relaxation.

Tonight, celebrate your wonderful travels together in Spain at a Farewell Reception and Dinner.
