August 29 Depart Gateway City

August 30 Copenhagen, Denmark

Arrive at Copenhagen Airport. Proceed through immigration to the baggage claim area and retrieve your luggage. After completing customs, AHI FlexAir passengers traveling on flights that qualify for the group arrival transfer and Land Program passengers who have purchased seats on the group transfer should exit the baggage claim area and proceed to the Arrivals Hall, where an AHI Travel representative will meet you.

Transfer to the Radisson Collection Hotel, Royal Copenhagen. Please note, if you arrive before check-in time, your room may not be immediately available.

Free Time: The afternoon is at leisure. Consider a stroll through the center of the city, easily accessible from the hotel, or walk to the nearby waterfront and Gefion Fountain.

August 31 Copenhagen, Denmark

Enrichment: Scandinavia Today. Discuss the current events shaping contemporary Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

Discovery: Rosenborg Castle.

Danish royals held court at this Renaissance palace for a century before turning it into a museum in the late 1700s. King Christian IV built this 17th-century treasure in the Dutch Renaissance style. View furnishings and portraits of monarchs from Christian IV to Frederik VII. In the treasury, admire the crown jewels, including Christian IV’s exquisite crown and Christian III’s jewel-studded sword. You may catch a glimpse of royal guards in their colorful uniforms marching on the nearby parade grounds. Stroll through the castle’s fragrant gardens, filled with fruit trees and statues.

Enjoy lunch at a typical Danish restaurant.

Discovery: The Canals of Copenhagen.

Cruise along the beloved waterways that weave through Copenhagen. Learn the city’s rich history while reveling in spectacular views as you drift past Amalienborg Palace, the Danish royal family’s home; the Little Mermaid statue; the Opera House; and the distinctive Black Diamond library with shiny black facets reflecting the sea and sky.

Free Time: Spend the rest of the day exploring Copenhagen at your leisure. Stroll over to Tivoli Gardens, a charming amusement park that has been delighting visitors since 1843, or visit the Carlsberg Brewery for a beer tasting.

September 1 Copenhagen, Denmark

Discovery: Copenhagen, Past and Present.

Your expert guide shares enchanting tales of history and famous Danes, including storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, while you roam the city’s warren of crooked back streets full of quaint buildings and celebrated landmarks.

September 2 Copenhagen | At Sea

Free Time: Make the most of your last morning in Copenhagen. Learn more about the Danish royal family and visit Amalienborg Palace or Christianborg Palace, which also is home of the Danish Parliament.

This afternoon, transfer to the port and board an overnight DFDS Seaways Ferry bound for Oslo, Norway. As the ship sails to Oslo, relish the picturesque scenery or settle into your cabin.

Tonight, on board the ship, experience an authentic smorgasbord, a Scandinavian feast!

September 3 Oslo, Norway

This morning, be sure to go on deck, where you’ll be greeted by one of the most breathtaking views of the Oslo Fjord. Lush, green forests line the fjord, which stretches for 62 miles. Many people come to the fjord to camp, fish, kayak and enjoy other outdoor activities.

Visit Holmenkollen Ski Jump, the impressive slope used in the 1952 Winter Olympics. Take in fantastic panoramas of stunning Oslo Fjord and the idyllic coastline. The nearby Ski Museum guides you through Norway’s 4,000-year history of Nordic and downhill skiing. Continue to Vigeland Park, filled with more than 200 bronze and granite sculptures by renowned artist Gustav Vigeland.

Enjoy an introduction to Norwegian cuisine during lunch.

September 4 Oslo, Norway

Discovery: Nordic Seafarers.

At the Viking Ship Museum, view wonderfully preserved ceremonial burial ships, buried more than 1,100 years ago. Their collection includes the Gokstad, Tune and Oseberg — the world’s best-preserved Viking vessel. These longships once carried their royal owners into the realm of the dead and offer precious insight into the vanished world of the Vikings. Continue to the Kon-Tiki Museum to see the balsa raft Kon-Tiki, which Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl sailed from Peru to Polynesia in 1947, and the totora-reed boat Ra II which he used to cross the Atlantic in 1970.

Free Time: The rest of the day is at leisure. Why not continue the maritime theme and stroll along the Harbour Promenade? From east to west, this 5.5-mile waterfront path takes you past the Opera House, the city’s modern architecture and much more! September 5 Oslo, Norway | Bergen

Depart for Bergen this morning.

Discovery: Bergen Railway.

Travel to Bergen on Europe’s highest altitude railway and one of the most scenic routes in the world. See marvelous scenery as you travel across the Hardangervidda, a plateau at more than 4,000 feet above sea level. The tracks climb to Finse, the highest point on the route, then the landscape changes dramatically as the train edges along lovely fjords, tumbling waterfalls and emerald forests. Keep an eye out for wild reindeer!

September 6 Bergen

Enrichment: The Fjords of Norway. Learn about the crucial role the beautiful fjords have played in Nordic geologic and cultural history.

Discovery: Bergen.

Nestled beside a sheltered harbor and surrounded by seven mountains and seven fjords, Norway’s second-largest city is said to have “its head in the sky and its feet in the sea.” Settled in 1070, Bergen became the most important town in medieval Norway, a residence of royalty and a major trading post for Hanseatic League maritime merchants. Explore Bryggen, which is associated with the city’s Hanseatic history, and walk through the old Hanseatic Warehouses. See the 750-year-old King Haakon’s Hall; Rosenkrantz Tower, Norway’s most important Renaissance-era monument; and St. Mary’s Church, built between 1130 and 1170. Tour hilltop Troldhaugen, the country home of the revered composer Edvard Grieg.

Free Time: The rest of the day is free to explore Bergen on your own. Stay and stroll along the quay, or visit several museums and galleries featuring everything from paintings to handicrafts. For an aerial view of the city, take a cable car to Ulriken, the highest of the seven mountains that frame Bergen.

September 7 Myrdal | Fjords | Voss district

Discovery: The Best of Norway.

Journey through some of the most wild, scenic wonders of Norway. Begin with a train journey on the Bergen Railway to Myrdal. Continue on a thrilling ride aboard the Flåm Railway, one of the steepest train rides in the world. Wind past snow-dusted peaks, where tiny farms cling to precipitous slopes and rivers and waterfalls slice through deep ravines. Spiral through mountainside tunnels to the pristine Aurlandsfjord, which is a branch of the Sognefjord, Norway’s longest fjord. Cruise the waters of the Aurlandsfjord to Gudvangen before exploring Voss, where vistas of mountains, forests, lakes and waterfalls await you!
