I’s on the World: Mountain Toppers

Oh, the places we go … University of Illinois alumni are globetrotters who travel near and far, but never forget their Alma Mater!

Generations of Illini trekked to the top of Mount LeConte to proudly display their Alma Mater’s flag. The Immen family (From left: Kristen, ’16 UIC; Steven, ’08 LAS, MD ’13 UIC; Rachel, ’08 LAS, MD ’13 UIC; Micah; Beth, ’82 bus; Joseph Christopher, ’79 LAS; and Jennifer ’11 LAS)  camped atop the third-highest peak in the Smoky Mountains National Park.

They viewed sunsets, enjoyed hearty meals and befriended other travelers. Beth reminisces that her most memorable moment was making it back down in a storm. “Everyone pictured, but the little one, has earned at least one degree from the University of the Illinois,” she says. “Here’s hoping he’ll be part of the Illini nation someday.”
