Lt. Edwards was commissioned 2nd Lt. in Fall 1917 in the Second Officers’ Training Camp, Ft. Sheridan, IL, and assigned to the 22nd Company. Upon receiving his commission he was ordered overseas, sailing as a casual officer in January, 1918. After a short course of training in Army schools of the AEF, he was assigned to the 18th Infantry Machine Gun Company and became an expert on machine guns. His last letter indicated that in April, 1918, he was with the French army at the front. Lt. Edwards was killed in action.
