Lt. Tarnoski served with the 354th Aero Squadron. According to the “History of 354th Aero Squadron”, Lt. Tarnoski’s demise happened as follows: “On January 7, 1919, an airplane accident resulted in the death of 2nd Lt. Alexander S. Tarnoski, Observer, and 2nd Lt. William G. Thomas, Pilot. They were engaged in gunnery practice over Boucq Lake, near Saizerais, and in making a steep climb their engine suddenly stopped. Their loss was keenly felt not only because they were the first officers the Squadron lost, but also because they were much loved by both officers and men.” Lt. Tarnoski is buried at St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France, Plot B Row 22 Grave 9.
