Mr. Bernhardt graduated in the Class of 1938 from Proviso Township High School. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on December 14, 1941, at Camp Grant, Illinois, with additional training at Camp Roberts, California. His unit of service is unknown, but he had engagements in North Africa and Italy and was killed in action in Italy from machine gun fire. His remains were returned to the U.S.
