Lt. Erlenbaugh enlisted September 24, 1941, at Chicago, Illinois, as an Aviation Cadet. He was the pilot of a Mustang fighter plane in North Africa. He died in a hospital in Tunisia, according to the War Department. Cause of death was not disclosed. He is buried at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Huntington, Indiana; Section E Lot 89E.
