Ms. Gilpatrick was commissioned into the Army Nursing Corps. She died in Philadelphia where she was a student nurse at a Philadelphia hospital. She is the only woman to have a pillar dedicated in her memory at the University of Illinois Memorial Stadium. She is buried at Little Rock Township Cemetery, Plano, Illinois.
