Major Crawford served with the First Battalion of the 33rd Infantry Regiment of the 31st Infantry Division under General Bluemel. He fought in the Battle of Bataan in 1942 and was captured on Bataan on April 9, 1942. He survived the brutal Bataan Death March but died of dysentery while a POW of the Japanese on 6/17/1942. He was awarded the Silver Star while Missing In Action for gallantry under fire when his action dispersed enemy machine gun units and turned them on the Japanese invader. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star in connection with military operations against the enemy (Japanese) during the period of December 7, 1941, to April 8, 1942.
