Lt. Clarke served with the 431st Bomber Squadron, 11th Bomber Group, Heavy. He was stationed on Carney Field, Guadalcanal; he flew missions against Rabaul. He was co-pilot of a Liberator bomber in the Pacific when it was shot down by enemy aircraft fire. Lt. Clarke is listed as Missing in Action or Buried at Sea on the Tablets of the Missing at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii. He was awarded the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and Purple Heart.
