Quartermaster Chapin was killed in a seaplane accident at Dunkirk. He is buried at the Somme American Cemetery, Bony, France, Plot D Row 3 Grave 12. He also has a memorial at Chapin Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Fulton County, Illinois.
