Lt. Doherty was a 1933 graduate of Proviso Township High School. He attended Northwestern University and then graduated from the University of Illinois. He enlisted in the Illinois National Guard and then the U.S. Army on March 5, 1941, attending Officer Candidate School. He received training at Camp Forrest, Tennessee; Fort Benning, Georgia; and New Caledonia. Lt. Doherty served with the Headquarters Squadron, American Division. He participated in the Battle of Guadacanal on October 13, 1942–a major two day battle at Henderson Field where over 1,000 Japanese were killed. Lt. Doherty is listed as Missing in Action or Buried at Sea on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart.
