Ensign Campbell was killed when the Navy plane in which he was flying on a voluntary mission out of the Navy air base at Melbourne, Florida, went into a spin and crashed. He had received his commission December 6, 1944, at Corpus Christi, Texas, and was taking operational training before going overseas.
