Sgt. Budway was an attendee of Proviso Township High School, Illinois. He was at the University of Illinois in 1941 but left to be inducted into the Army on May 28, 1942. He served with the 31st Bombardment Squadron, 5th Bombardment Group, 13th Air Force–member of a B-24 crew. He was a gunner, with engagements including the Treasury Islands in the Pacific Ocean. He was killed when his plane flew a night mission over Japanese held Rabaul. Due to enemy action over the target, the plane made an emergency crash landing in the Northern Solomons. Sgt. Budway is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, DC, Section 12 Site 2738. He earned a Purple Heart.
