Lt. Graves served with Company F, 16th U.S. Cavalry. He last commanded a unit of the Philippine Scouts in the Philippines, and was presumably killed in the Bataan area. Lt. Graves death tended to confirm reports of American guerrilla warfare there. He is listed as Missing in Action or Buried at Sea on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart.
