Colonel Barnum served in the U.S. Army, Headquarters, Services of Supply. He assumed command as Chief of Army Exchange Service (PX Officer) on March 12, 1942. He died from a non-combat related incident and is buried at Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, England, Plot F Row 4 Grave 35. He earned the Legion of Merit.
