Jack Marvin Redman
Watseka, IL
World War II
Private Redman was killed on the island of Tarawa by a hidden Japanese sniper on Jack’s second day on the island. He is listed as Missing in Action or Buried at Sea on the Tablets of the Missing at Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii. He earned the Purple Heart. As an interesting side note as to the exact location of Mr. Redman’s body–Mr. Redman was originally buried by his comrades on Tarawa, but then was moved to the U.S. at Oahu, Hawaii, at what is now the Punchbowl Cemetery, site of the Honolulu Memorial. Many fallen soldiers were moved as a group, without individual identification made. As a result, attempts are being made to identify these “unknown” soldiers through dental records.
UPDATE as of January, 2015–Mr. Pat Harper reports that Mr. Redman’s remains have been positively identified as of late in 2014!! His remains were located not at Punchbowl in Hawaii, but almost exactly where the Marines buried him over 71 years ago. DNA and dental records were not necessary; Mr. Redman’s remains included one of his dog tags for positive identification. A tentative date in May, 2015 has been set for services for Mr. Redman in his hometown of Watseka, Illinois. More details will be added as available.
MAY, 2015—(see full obituary information from Web address above)–Funeral services were held on May 16, 2015, at Watseka, Illinois, for Jack Redman. Visitation and services were held at First United Methodist Church, Watseka, and burial at G.A.R. Cemetery, Watseka.
