Lincoln Abraham Chayes
Chicago, IL
World War II
Lt. Chayes was killed when his ship, the USS Haraden, was hit by a Japanese Kamikaze which crashed into the starboard side. Lt. Chayes was one of 14 crew members killed. He is buried at Westlawn Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois.
Before the war, Chayes would often visit blues clubs in Chicago, and he would sometimes be called onstage to play. Billie Holiday was one of the singers who knew him and asked him to accompany her.
