Lt. Allen served with the 43rd Squadron, 315th Troop Carrier Group. He was killed over Germany during the airborne crossing of the Rhine. A veteran of two phases of the war, he flew 50 missions from Africa as a ball-turret gunner on a B-17 in 1943. He had been flying from an English base since December, 1944, when he returned to Europe after earning his commission as a navigator. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 12 Oak Leaf Clusters and Purple Heart. He is buried at Ardennes American Cemetery, Neupre, Belgium, Plot A Row 38 Grave 48.
