First Lieutenant Mitchell served with the 42nd Bomber Squadron, 11th Bomber Group, Heavy. He was killed in the crash of an Army bomber in the Pacific. Rumors that he might be alive were dispelled by a fellow crewmember, Lt. Lou Zamperini, former distance runner from the University of Southern California, who was released from a Japanese prison. Lt. Zamperini reported that Lt. Mitchell perished in the crash from which Zamperini escaped. Lt. Mitchell is listed as Missing in Action or Buried at Sea on the Tablets of the Missing at Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii. He was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters.
