Lt. Wilkins died in a plane crash of an Army B-17 Flying Fortress near Cape Lookout, Oregon. He was on a routine training flight. Nine crew members were killed, including Lt. Wilkins. He is buried at Williamsfield Cemetery in Knox County, Illinois.
