Stanford Gene Wolfson

Lt. Wolfson served as a Co-Pilot in the Army Air Force and was assigned to the 95th Bomb Group (H), 335th Bomb Squadron. His aircraft was hit over a target in the Kaiserslautern, Germany area. During the flight back all crewmembers but the pilot and navigator bailed out. Lt. Wolfson landed in a wooden area about 12 kilometers southwest of Kaiserslautern. He was taken prisoner by members of the Kaiserslautern police. They turned him over to a group of German soldiers. Shortly thereafter he was shot to death by a German National. His body was buried in the Kaiserslautern Cemetery. In 1949 Lt. Wolfson’s remains were exhumed from the Kaiserslautern, Germany Cemetery and returned to the U.S. His remains were buried in the Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery, University City, Missouri, on February 27, 1949. Lt. Wolfson was the veteran of many missions and had received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with several clusters, the Presidential Unit Citation, and awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.
