The World’s Most Influential Scientists

(Images courtesy of UI Public Affairs) An analysis of the past decade’s most influential papers has resulted in eight U of I faculty members being named Highly Cited Researchers.
The global list—compiled by the Web of Science group, a Clarivate Analytics company—recognizes researchers who have produced multiple papers that are ranked in the top 1 percent in their field and year of publication, as determined by citation frequency. Web of Science selected 6,216 researchers for their performance in 21 fields and for cross-field influence in scholarly publications from 2008 to 2018.
The Illinois faculty are: crop sciences and plant biology professor Elizabeth Ainsworth, PHD ’03 ACES (highly cited for impact on multiple fields); materials science and engineering professor Axel Hoffmann (multiple fields); electrical and computer engineering professor Thomas Huang (engineering); geography and geographic information science professor Mei-Po Kwan (multiple fields); crop sciences and plant biology professor Stephen Long (multiple fields); bioengineering professor Shuming Nie (multiple fields); plant biology professor Donald Ort (plant and animal science); and mechanical science and engineering professor Arend van der Zande (multiple fields).
