I’s on the World: East African Safari

Oh, the places we go … University of Illinois alumni are globetrotters who travel near and far, but never forget their Alma Mater!

Scott T. Petereit, ’89 VM, DVM ’91, and Jill (Upton) Stocki, ’88 ACES, embarked on a “bucket-list safari and gorilla trek trip” to East Africa in January. The former Illini cheerleaders and college friends encountered Raha, an orphaned black rhino calf, at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya’s Nairobi National Park.

They also encountered a reminder of their Alma Mater, Stocki says. “Within an hour of landing in Kigali, Rwanda, a jeep pulled beside us, proudly displaying the Illini ‘I’ logo on its spare tire cover. It was a reminder of how global the U. of I. is and how deep our alumni pride runs, no matter the distance from Champaign.” Petereit is co-founder of Partners Veterinary Group in Mt. Prospect, Ill. Stocki is a retired dietitian who devoted her career to nutrition clinical research.
