It can feel like we are constantly having to deal with new computer technologies: software on a laptop, apps on a phone, features on a Smart TV, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, doorbells, home heating systems, Fitbits, watches, medical apps, the list goes on. And just as you have figured one out, there’s an upgrade or a new feature to deal with. When they work right, and we can figure out how to use them, the technologies can be really useful, helpful, and even fun. But when they are confusing, or we are in a rush and can’t book the ticket we want, they can seem to have a mind of their own – and a seeming desire to be awkward and make our lives annoying. People are inclined to blame themselves rather than to blame bad design. In this talk, I’ll explore some examples of bad computer design and why they can be so confusing and irritating.
