Staff Sergeant Justus was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corps on February 23, 1942, at Camp Grant, Illinois. He trained at several air fields in the U.S. and in England during 1942 and 1943. He served with the 331st Bomber Squadron, 94th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 8th Air Force. His Squadron call sign was “Agmer.” He was engaged in bombing missions out of Bury Airfield, Saint Edmunds, England, over Kiel, Germany, where his squadron attacked U-Boat yards. His group was attacked heavily by Luftwaffle, and he was determined missing in action on June 13, 1943. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Air Medal. S/Sgt. Justus is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing, Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, England.
