Lt. Wagner served with Company E, 61st Infantry Regiment, 5th Division. He left the University of Illinois to enter First Officers’ Training Camp at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, where he was assigned to the 1st Company. He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant and ordered to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where he remained 1 month and transferred to Camp Greene, North Carolina, and sailed to France in April, 1918, with the 61st Infantry. On October 13, 1918, Lt. Wagner was hit by shrapnel and died of those wounds on November 8, 1918. He had been promoted to 1st Lieutenant shortly after he arrived in France and was recommended for Captain shortly before his death. He is buried at Suresnes American Cemetery, Suresnes, France, Plot B Row 4 Grave 12.
