Captain Jacobsgaard died in action when his helicopter was shot down and burned. Serving as civic action officer of Marine Observation Squadron 6, 1st Marine Air Wing in Quang Tri, South Vietnam, Captain Jacobsgaard had under his responsibility the refugee village of Ba Ben. With a population of 2,500, it was located 15 miles south of the demilitarized zone. Selected for a captaincy in October, 1968, he received the promotion posthumously.
