Lt. Johnson was a teacher at Carlyle grade school before entering military service on July 3, 1942. After training at Ft. Benning, Georgia, he left for the European theatre. He served with the 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division. He was killed during the Battle of the Bulge and was buried at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Sandoval, Illinois.
