Lt. Col. Dixon served with the 40th Bomber Squadron, 6th Bomber Group, Very Heavy. He was commander of a B-29 squadron based in the Marianas and killed in action over Shimonosiki Straits, Japan. One of the first flying cadets to enlist from the local area, Colonel Dixon began flight training in March, 1939 and served for 3 years in the Caribbean, much of the time as commander of a B-24 squadron. He took B-29 training at Grand Island and Kearney, Nebraska and went overseas in February, 1945. He is listed as Missing in Action or Buried at Sea on the Tablets of the Missing at Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii. He was awarded the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and Purple Heart.
