Lt. Gunn served with the 404th Fighter Bomber Group, 506th Fighter Bomber Squadron. He was killed piloting a P-39 Q Airacobra in a crash, 8 miles south of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He is buried at Valhalla Cemetery, Bel-Nor, Missouri.
