Lt. Gedge served with the 440th Bomber Squadron, 319th Bomber Group, Medium. He was on board a train taking prisoners of war from Italy to Germany when the train was bombed on 1/28/1944 by friendly fire of a B26 aircraft from the 320 Bomb Squad, USAAF. Lt. Gedge was seriously wounded and admitted to the civil hospital at Orvieto with burns where he died of his injuries. He is buried at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery, Nettuno, Italy, Plot J Row 1 Grave 17. He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters.
