Captain Fischer was assigned to the 3rd Ordnance Battalion (Ammunition), Explosive Ordnance Disposal Section. Captain Fischer was killed instantly while sleeping when his room in the Bachelor Officer Quarters took a direct hit from a 122mm rocket. The rocket exploded next to his bed on the first floor. This took place at Long Binh, Republic of Vietnam.
