Captain Guthier entered the Army in June, 1942, and served with the 247th Engineer Combat Battalion as a combat engineer. His Company replaced bridges destroyed by the Germans, with Bailey Bridges, as they fell back to Germany. He also commanded a Company of the Battalion that took part in the Normandy Invasion–they had been commended several times for activity under fire. He is buried at Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, Henri-Chapelle, Belgium, Plot E Row 3 Grave 62. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
