Lt. Carl served with the 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. He was a veteran of campaigns in North Africa and Sicily. He assumed command of one of the first outfits to land in France where he was killed. Lt. Carl is buried at Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France, Plot B Row 20 Grave 42. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart.
