Captain Ireland died at his home in Washburn, IL, after a brief illness. He was also known as Captain “Blue Blazes” Ireland. He had returned from France in May, 1919, after ten months’ service, his last work having been as commander of Co. L., 341st Infantry, 81st division. He had also acted as bayonet instructor, not only overseas but also at Camp Grant and was often called on for exhibition of his expertness. He was trained at Fort Sheridan in the Spring of 1917.
