Lt. Morse left the University of Illinois to enlist in the First Officers’ Training Camp, 4th Company, Fort Sheridan, Illinois. He remained at the fort for one month, then transferred to Fortress Monroe, Virginia. There he was commissioned in the Coast Artillery and assigned to duty at Key West, Florida, where he remained 3 months and was then transferred to the Air Service as an observer. After training in Austin, Texas, Lt. Morse was ordered overseas, sailing in March, 1918, in command of a casual company. Upon arrival in France he was assigned to Samur for further training. In August he was assigned to the 135th Aero Squadron where he was killed in combat by German planes. He is buried at St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France, Plot B Row 19 Grave 33.
