Sgt. Degenhart served with the 524th Bomb Squadron, 379th Bomb Group, Heavy, at Kimbolton Field. He was a waist gunner on a B-17G. He was killed in action during a bombing mission near Munich, Germany. Eight of the nine aircrew members were killed on impact. Sgt. Degenhart was originally buried in Germany but later reinterred at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Oakville, Missouri.
