Lt. Jenkins served on the USS Monssen which was hit by 37 shells from Japanese ships during the night at Guadalcanal. The ship was reduced to a burning hulk. Lt. Jenkins was killed during this attack and is listed as Missing in Action or Buried at Sea on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
