Ensign Hodges was one of two men killed when a Navy observation plane crashed and sank in Clear Lake, 10 miles north of San Francisco, CA. He was piloting the plane and was accompanied by a radioman. Both bodies were recovered. Ensign Hodges is buried at Rose Lawn Cemetery, Champaign, IL.
