Lt. Heckmann enlisted in the Army Air Corps on December 29, 1941, at Chanute Airfield, Rantoul, Illinois. He graduated from the Golf Coast Training Center at Foster Field, Texas, and was the stationed at Altus Army Airfield, Altus, Oklahoma. Lt. Heckmann died in a plane crash near Altus while testing the plane. He is buried at Monticello Cemetery, Monticello, Illinois.
