Lt. Hurd served with the 576th Bombardment Squadron, 392nd Bombardment Group as a B-24 co-pilot. The morning of August 5, 1944, the plane took off at 5 a.m. to bomb Brunswick, Germany. The plane crashed near East Dereham, England, killing all on board.
