Lt. Ellingson had been in service since late 1942 and served overseas with the 735th Bomb Squadron, 453rd Bomb Group, Heavy. He was co-pilot of a B-24 Liberator when he was killed along with his crew members when the plane crashed on a take-off from an ice-covered field in England. He is buried at Poplar Grove Cemetery, Poplar Grove, Illinois. Lt. Ellingson earned the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster.
