John Henry Dallenbach
Champaign, IL
World War I
Mr. Dallenbach served in the Infantry; was killed in action in Argonne Forest, France. His family learned of his death on Armistice Day (November 11, 1918) by telegram. As everyone in Champaign-Urbana was outside cheering for the end of World War I, family members were grieving news of Mr. Dallenbach’s death. The family learned Mr. Dallenbach was killed by artillery. His unit had just moved into a position previously held by Germans and the Germans had zeroed in their guns on their previous position. They shot shells into the area and John was killed by a shell while tieing his boots.
