Lt. Blum was a member of the “Flying Illini” at NAS Pensacola. He survived the sinking of the USS Long (DMS-12) on January 6, 1945, but perished aboard the USS Hovey (DMS-11) on January 7, 1945. He is listed as Missing in Action or Buried at Sea on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines. Lt. Blum was awarded the Purple Heart.
