Lt. Hughes was commissioned at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. He trained there and went overseas with the 7th Armored Division, and later transferred to the 83rd Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. He was killed in action while leading his men into Gruben, Germany. Upon Lt. Hughes’ death, his entire company wept.
