Private Mattingly served with Company M, 23rd Engineers. He enlisted in December, 1917, in the engineering corps and went to Ft. Thomas, Kentucky, later going to Camp Meade, Maryland. He sailed for France in March, 1918, and died of influenza on his ship. His body was returned to Champaign where the University of Illinois held a large funeral in his honor as the first U of I graduate to die in the war. He is buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Champaign, IL.
