Lt. Gehlbach was a Navy pilot killed on a mission over Iwo Jima. He served as a patrol plane commander of a Navy Liberator while attached to a fleet air photographic squadron 5. Lt. Gehlbach was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Gold Star, and Bronze Star Medal. He is buried at New Union Cemetery, Lincoln, Illinois.
